NUCCA FAQs

What is a subluxation?

In simple terms, a subluxation is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate spinal nerves. The condition, called atlas subluxation process, or ASC, can deliver total postural and body function consequences.

Two major effects occur in the body due to the presence of the ASC:

1. One’s entire posture below the head will shift based on the injury that caused the ASC. This occurs because your eyes and ears need to be level with gravity for proper brain function. If the head is out of balance with the body below, this can create tension and tightness throughout your body, and can cause discomfort in tendons, ligaments, joints and muscles. The longer this is left uncorrected the more damage is created, causing the body to break down over time.

2. The misalignment causes a continuous and constant stress response due to the altered position sensors of the upper neck that are vital to overall health and vitality. This alteration can have debilitating physiological consequences.

(a.) Continuous stress hormones are released leading to Chronic Stress Response, (CSR being the cause of all chronic disease in humans!)

(b.) Increased inflammatory process occurs further inflaming areas of postural and organ stress.

How did I get this way?

Trauma is the usual cause of your ASC - from birth trauma like forceps delivery to falling as a baby, to auto accidents. Sports injuries and repetitive stress injuries can also cause the ASC. Sitting, slouching and time left uncorrected all make the problem worse and worse.

How do we correct it?
Based on findings from the X-Rays that are taken, the doctor will determine a specific correction vector. Using a precise technique, the doctor will restore normal neck position back to a relaxed position.
How long is it going to take?

There are three phases of care at The Balanced Spine

1

The initial phase of care or, “Base Camp”, takes 6 weeks and is designed to give your body the best chance to take care of the inflammation process that has trapped you in your current state of health. If, however, we get to the end of 6 weeks and you’re feeling better and we stop care here, your body will not have had enough chance to get stronger and more stable, and you will fall back into inflammation again.

2

The second phase of care is “Correction”, and is designed to make your new corrected position your strong normal position. This is where the true healing occurs, but as a general rule it takes approximately one month for every year you have been misaligned.

The Doctors of The Balanced Spine will see you less frequently during this phase of care.

3

The third phase of care is “Wellness”, and simply requires maintenance of your spinal correction.

The average patient at The Balanced Spine has appointments during this phase of care about once every two months, up to twice a year. Wellness at The Balanced Spine is more than just maintaining your alignment. During all phases of your care, your doctor will help you reach whatever wellness goals you desire through our customizable wellness themes that will support your spinal corrective care.

How do I maintain the correction?
The doctor will give you specific instructions and targeted exercises to help you maintain your correction. The misalignment correction will get stronger over time as your new alignment becomes your new habit with regular monitoring and specific adjustments during your care at The Balanced Spine.

Auto Injury FAQs

Is it true that people can develop symptoms from a car accident years after that accident has occurred?

Yes. The body does everything it possibly can first before it lets you know. Much like you can be developing heart disease years before it shows up as a symptom, or instantly and shows up as an unfortunate heart attack.

Remember, injuries don’t have to cause an immediate symptom so its important to get checked within days of an accident. Permanent and silent damage usually begin within a week of an accident.

It was just a small collision, why do I feel so stiff?
Any accident 5 MPH and higher can tear loose connective tissue leaving damage that you can feel. The magnified effects you may feel from a seemingly small collision are caused by the misalignment that occurred during that impact. Just a simple bump from behind, your head can be pushed off position from your spine.
Why should I decide to go to The Balanced Spine today, can’t I wait to see if I stop hurting?
Different people respond differently to an accident. Two people can be in the same accident, one can be sore right away and the other could take months for symptoms to show. The important thing is to take all accidents seriously and have your spine checked.
I had my spouse and kids in the car, do they have PIP coverage too?
Yes. If your car insurance has Personal Injury Protection (PIP), which you do unless you have waived it in writing, everyone is protected if they are injured by the accident.
Does The Balanced Spine work with my attorney and other healthcare providers after I start care?

Yes. If you have other attorneys and practitioners we will work hard with them to help you as much as possible.

If you do not have a team established, we will work with you to build a team from our resources that we trust and have worked with before to speed your recovery.

What is the best way to open a PIP claim?

If it is determined that a PIP case is necessary to open, The Balanced Spine’s insurance department will coordinate and guide you step-by-step to make opening a claim as easy as possible.

Choosing The Balanced Spine provides you with a doctor that is specifically trained to bring your spine back to a normal and balanced position correcting the cause of your injuries.

What is the difference between choosing to go to The Balanced Spine and choosing to go to a physical therapist?

Choosing a physical therapist might help you rehabilitate muscles and joints that are damaged or or they might stay damaged because of your injuries. They are a valuable part of your recovery, however rehabilitating muscles and joints without correcting the position of your spine will leave you with an incomplete healing process.

Most of the time both correcting your spine and rehabilitating with physical therapy are needed with recovery.

The doctors of The Balanced Spine work with a number of physical therapists to help you coordinate care and restore your health.
